This book follows the adventures of a number of central ‘pig’ characters in a far off 'Pig World', which collectively explain and parody some of the most important developments in recent world political history. In style and content the work is somewhat a cross between Animal Farm and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Dealing With Pigs is the story of Hunkle Trotter and his other ‘trotter’ friends who live in a distant ‘pig world’ where there exists a number of different pig communities each of which represents to some degree the varying cultural, racial and historical components that make up our human society. There are four different lands in this world: Mudwallow, Hamcorner, Cherry Dell and Swipork Continent, and there are different races of pigs living in each. There are the ‘pigs’ of Mudwallow (the Wallow) and Hamcorner (the Corner), the ‘hogs’ of Cherry Dell and the ‘swines’ and ‘porks’ of Swipork. There also are the cruel and treacherous ‘boars’ who live in the Bulgus Mountains which border the Wallow. Finally there are the ‘baconers’, strange pigs who worship a different religious faith from that of the Great One, which in two different variants has a solid grip on the minds of the pigs of Mudwallow and Hamcorner.
Hunkle and his friends are all ‘trotters’ - the hard working pigs of the Wallow who live under the rule of the richer pigs of the land known as ‘snouters’. All pigs worship ‘the Great One’ - a seemingly supernatural, all powerful spirit that inhabits the volcano known as Black Mountain. The pig leader of this Faith, and servant of the Great One in the Wallow is 'the Holy Pomponer'. Assisted by his ‘pompswines’ (those swines in the employ of the Faith), the Holy Pomponer, in an uneasy alliance with the snouters and their boar mercenaries, rule the Wallow and its trotters with an iron fist (or ‘hoof’). Across the Big River in Hamcorner, Pomponer's counterpart and deadly rival, 'Pimlico the Divine' does the same with his loyal 'pimpporks'. Hunkle and his friends, with the help and leadership of Cousin Crumpet, a very ‘learned trotter’ (a somewhat Marxist figure), begin to question and then lead a revolt against the injustices of their world and the harsh rule of the snouters and the Faith. They reject life as trotters and call themselves ‘snotters’. The snotters begin a dangerous quest to find the truth of what is really behind the power of the Great One and to struggle for a better way of life for all pigs. This quest leads the central characters through many adventures including wars, revolutions, religious purges and more, all of which mirror many major events and developments in world political history. On a lighter note, their endeavors take them to different lands and different exciting cultures - to Hamcorner, to Cherry Dell and finally one day even to Swipork Continent itself. Ultimately the snotters discover the mystery of the ‘badapple’ and manage to harness its powers to make bombs and 'flying mudbaths'. They also manage to unravel the sinister conspiracy that has been ruling the lives of the trotters for many long years. They discover the Great One is nothing more than a mere living being (a human) from another world (a cruel and greedy butcher named Charlie Best). Rallying all behind them with their weapons they destroy the Faith of the Great One in Mudwallow and overthrow the rule of the snouters. However, for the pigs of Mudwallow history appears to repeat itself as the new world that is constructed only offers more injustices, oppression and more dangers. Rival empires grow in the pig world and all sorts of wondrous ‘goodies’ and weapons are made. Ultimately at the end of this book, the strange and little understood ‘baconers’ begin a bloody 'holy war' against the pigs of Mudwallow. Thus begins a new quest for Hunkle and his friends to find new answers for the troubles that plague their world.
